South America has been split left and right

Colombia’s presidential election has reshaped South America’s political landscape. With the victory of Abelardo de la Espriella, Colombia joins a growing group of countries led by right-wing governments, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru. Just a few years ago, left-wing leaders dominated much of the continent.
The result highlights how quickly political tides can change. Since 2023, several elections have shifted the regional balance, creating a much more evenly divided South America. Colombia’s vote may prove to be one of the most consequential, as the continent continues to debate issues ranging from security and migration to economic growth and international alignment.
